Background of the Study
Religious texts in Nigeria, including sermons and prayers, form a critical component of both public and private life. Syntactic regularity—the consistent use of sentence structures and grammatical patterns—is essential for ensuring that these texts are understood and carry their intended spiritual and cultural significance (Okoro, 2023). This study examines the syntactic structures in Nigerian religious texts by analyzing sermons delivered in churches and mosques as well as written prayers. Such texts often employ formal, standardized syntax that reflects traditional religious norms, yet variations can occur due to regional dialects or contemporary influences (Adeleke, 2024). Through discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, the research aims to identify patterns of syntactic regularity and irregularity, assessing how these structures contribute to the clarity and efficacy of religious communication. The study also explores whether modern influences and language reforms have impacted the traditional syntactic frameworks used in religious contexts (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of syntactic regularity in religious texts, there is limited empirical research on how sermons and prayers maintain or deviate from standardized syntactic patterns in Nigeria. Most studies focus on theological content rather than on the linguistic structures that ensure clarity and comprehension (Okoro, 2023). This gap hinders our ability to assess whether syntactic variation in religious discourse affects the effectiveness of spiritual communication. Without systematic analysis, the role of syntactic structures in conveying religious messages remains poorly understood. This study seeks to address this deficiency by analyzing the syntactic regularity of sermons and prayers in Nigerian religious contexts (Adeleke, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the syntactic structures in Nigerian religious texts, offering insights into how language maintains clarity in spiritual discourse. The findings will benefit religious educators, linguists, and policymakers by promoting effective communication in religious settings (Okoro, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing syntactic regularity in Nigerian sermons and prayers.
